The Songwriting Course with Jony Rockstar offers students an exclusive insight into how to write hit pop songs with well-known songwriter/producer/remixer/musician Jony Rockstar. Jony has written, produced and remixed hits for Sugababes, Amy Winehouse and Alicia Keys among others. This 4 week course is your chance to take an in-depth look at Jony’s personal studio-based songwriting techniques as he works with up and coming singer Miss D to create a brand new song in his own unmistakeable style, explaining his techniques to you at each stage of the process. Using live action, screen capture footage and Point Blank’s unique DVR™ video feedback system, you will work alongside Jony to create your own song by the end of the course. An unprecedented insight into how a top class producer/writer gets the job done!

Week 1:  Building Your Backing Track

  • Using reference songs: analysing styles and tempo.
  • Starting with a beat: drum loops as a starting point, editing techniques
  • Music theory: basic scales and chords
  • Song key: chord progressions and chord patterns within a key
  • Choice of chord progression for this song

Week 2: Finishing Your Backing Track

  • The role of the bass: adding a bassline to your chord pattern
  • Song structure: the role of each section
  • Structure, commercial music and radio play: examples of different song structures
  • Finalising the chord pattern and basic arrangement for the song
  • Adding 'personality’ to your track: elements that bring interest to your track

Week 3: Lyrics and Melody

  • Writing a melody: analysing different types of melodies
  • Working with a singer: developing a melody for the song
  • Subject Matter: where to find inspiration
  • Choosing a title: tips and techniques
  • Lyrics: the role of each section (verse, chorus, bridge, M8) - lyric styles – rhyming structure

Week 4: Finishing Your Song

  • Recording the vocal: how to work with a singer
  • Recording vocals in the studio: different sections
  • How to 'comp' vocals for a master vocal track
  • Tracking vocals: why track vocals?
  • Adding harmonies to reinforce lines: chorus
  • Final arrangement, dynamics, levels
