Reason is a versatile and powerful piece of music software, which few people learn to use to it's full potential. On the advanced Reason course, you will be guided by an experienced pro music producer demonstrating high-end techniques. From Rewiring to sidechaining, creating your own Rex files and Combinator patches, to vocoding, mixing & mastering.

Week 1: Synthesis (Graintable)

  • Granular synthesis
  • Wavetable synthesis
  • Using the Malstrom synth in Reason

Week 2: Vocoder

  • Vocoder parameters
  • Vocoding drums and vocals
  • Vocoding: advanced tips

Week 3: Sampling part 1

  • Legal issues: copyright and sample clearance
  • Using the NNXT sampler in Reason
  • Creating a patch

Week 4: Sampling Part 2

  • Creative sampling: selecting random samples
  • Auto-mapping samples. Multilayered samples
  • Modulating via LFO. Crossfading amp envelope

Week 5: Recycle

  • Chopping and editing in Recycle, useful shortcuts
  • Exporting Rex & MIDI Files
  • Extracting grooves from a drum loop

Week 6: MIDI Controller Assignments & Performance

  • What is automation? Automation lanes & tools
  • Assigning drums to the QWERTY keyboard
  • Assigning MIDI controllers, Redrum pattern switching

Week 7: Combinator Part 1

  • Combinator preset patches
  • Getting creative with the Combinator
  • How to create an emulation of the Roland TB303

Week 8: Combinator Part 2

  • What is sidechaining?
  • Sidechaining using the Combinator
  • Creative effects with side chaining

Week 9: Tips And Tricks - Mixing Down

  • Using the mixer in Reason: professional tips & tricks

  • Levels, panning and EQ

  • FX channels: how to use reverb & delay

Week 10: Mastering

  • What is Mastering? Why do I need to master my track?
  • Basic ergonomics
  • Loudness and compression

Week 11: Rewire to other DAW's

  • What is Rewire? Master & slave
  • Stereo & multiple output configurations
  • Rewiring to Cubase, Ableton Live & Logic

Week 12: Final Project

  • Final audio mixdown and burn audio CD
  • Final Test
  • Submit final project
