Week 1: Sampling & The Roots of Hip Hop

  • History of Hip Hop. The birth of sampling
  • Sampling theory and the law on sampling
  • Practical sampling with Logic's EXS24
  • Editing, processing and layering loops
  • Jamming with loops "MPC Style"
  • Using Logic 9 Flextime

Week 2: Beatmaking

  • Download exclusive MIDI  files of classic hip hop beats.
  • Building Drum Banks. Layering samples
  • Analysing Groove - pushing & pulling beats
  • Over 45 minutes of exclusive Beat Analysis videos.
  • Deconstruct beats by Timbaland, Dre, Jay Dilla, The Neptunes and others.

Week 3: Musical Elements

  • Basslines - choosing the right sounds
  • Programming basslines
  • Programming other parts (piano, strings etc.)
  • Creating and using synthesized sounds
  • Creating your own sampled loops
  • Degrading the sound to add authentic vintage flavour

Week 4: Vocals, Arrangement & Mixing

  • Arranging the backing track
  • Working with MC's
  • Editing and overdubbing vocals
  • Compression & EQ
