Ashley Beedle Q&A: On Production & Earning a Living from Music – 13 April

Update: Re-watch the session below. A massive thanks to Ashley Beedle for stopping by!

DJ, producer and serial remixer, Ashley Beedle is a true mainstay of the UK house music scene, with a passion for the groove that clearly still runs strong two decades after he first made a name for himself.

Back then he was one of three producers who made up Black Science Orchestra whose debut full-length dropped in 1994. Many of their club classics such as ‘Philadelphia’, ‘Strong’ and ‘New Jersey Deep’, heavily influenced by rare-groove and disco flavours, would not sound out of place on today’s dancefloors with the 90s house sound bursting back into mainstream consciousness.

Never one to settle on one alias for long, his Ballistic Brothers project resulted in another major hit with their 1995 LP, London Hooligan Soul followed up by several more releases on London club staple Junior Boys Own.

Beedle is perhaps most well-known for being one of the trio who made up X-Press 2. Flanked by DJ Diesel and DJ Rocky, they first gained underground notoriety with their multi-deck sets that consisted of up to 12 turntables between them… a feat that had never been seen before, and still rarely is!

Amongst several singles from X-Press 2′s albums was their cross-over smash hit ‘Lazy’ featuring vocals from Talking Head’s David Byrne and this genius video (below) which reached #1 in America and #2 in UK singles charts.

The list of artists he has remixed is hugely impressive and includes Kate Bush, Lily Allen, Mika, Manic Street Preachers, Sly & Robbie, Laurent Garnier, The Streets, Mr Scruff, Bob Marley, Jamiroquai, The Rolling Stones, Curtis Mayfield, Armand Van Helden amongst many more! He has headed up 4 labels in his time and continues his prolific output of remixes and productions including his latest project MAVIS, inspired by an evening listening to Mavis Staples and the Staples Singers.

On Wednesday 13th April (1pm BST) Ashley Beedle will be coming into the Point Blank studios for a live Q & A session! We will cover topics such as his approach to making a living from music in 2011, how X-Press 2 put together their DJ set up, what it is like to have a top 10 hit and tour worldwide, and his approach to remixing as well as giving you the chance to ask your own questions. To reserve your place get in touch with davidm@pointblanklondon.com. The session is FREE and open to all. Be quick though because spaces are strictly limited and allocated on a first come first serve basis.

And for those who can’t make it down to our London based studios, we will once again be streaming the whole session live into your living rooms through our livestream channel. You will even have the opportunity to ask him your own questions through the live chat function.
